If I had to chose one makeup item to wear for the rest of my life, it would be lip liner. I never leave the house without a lip product on, whether that is lipstick or lip liner (or both), but the absolute most important for me, is lip liners. Over the past couple of years my obsession with lip liners grew, and my collection too expanded. I have, by no means, tried every brand of lip liner, but I certainly own a few of some of the most popular ones.
In todays post i’ll review every brand of lip liner I own, so keep reading if you want my thoughts on each of them.
Makeup for ever artist color pencil - 24$
Very creamy - but not so that it breaks or clumps up, just perfect try balanced.
Feels like nothing on the lips - Although it is pigmented it still feels like nothing on the lips, unlike other lip liners that feel thick or heavy when applied.
Long lasting - I think MUFE really cracked the code with this pencil, as it is smooth in application, you have some play time to blend, it feels like nothing AND it lasts long.
Wooden pencil - my personal preference when it comes to pencils, as I like to control how thin I sharpen it. I also find that wooden pencils last longer over time as the don’t break as easy, and i’m pretty sure they contain more product.
Never cakey or clumpy - some lip liners tend to be too creamy, and can become almost clumpy and patchy on the lips. These do not do that. They look perfect every time.
Bonuspoint for actually being a multi-use stick, for both eyes, face and lips.
Mac cosmetics lip pencil - 25$
Generally very good - your standard lip liner.
Creamy - Again, these are creamy and easy to apply, but not too soft in the formula so that they break or clump up. unfortunately I have noticed some difference in the colour “Subculture”. in difference to all of the other shades, it’s kind of dry and hard, and I often need to heat it up on my hand or with a lighter for it to rub off on my lips. Not sure whether that is a malfunction on the specific one I bought or a problem in general. I’m aware that the same makeup item in different colours can have slight variations in formula and therefore application, but ive only owned one “Subculture” so I can’t compare it.
Long lasting - The pencils last long on the lips, as they to dry down after a few minutes. if I wear only lip liner i’m sure they would last all day, but I usually combine it with lip gloss or a balm, which does reduce the lasting power a bit.
Feels light on the lips - again, no complaints on the way it feels on the lips. I would say that the MUFE ones feels even less noticeable on the lips, but these from Mac are also very lightweight.
Great colour payoff.
Longest lasting lip liner I own - When this is applied it does not budge. I even struggle to remove it with regular micellar water.
Dries down quick - This means that you don’t really have a lot of time to blend and move the product around if that’s something you’d like to do, but again, in exchange for that it does not budge on the lips. and even though it dries down quickly on the lips, the product itself does not dry in the tube.
Great pigment payoff - very pigmented, very smooth and easy to apply. I would say it is a notch creamier and thicker in formula than both the MUFE and MAC pencils. As it is on the thicker side when it comes to formula, it’s also something that you’ll feel on the lips.
Wooden pencil (again, my preferred product)
Great affordable lip liners.
Creamy and pigmented - these reminds me slightly of the ones from MAC cosmetics in the way they apply, feel on the lips and the pigmentation. only downside to these, are that I have experienced that they can look a bit chalky if too much is applied. specifically with the colour “Nougat”.
Wooden pencils - the only thing I find a bit annoying is that they are rectangular in the shape, so it’s not always so easy to sharpen them.
Makeup by Mario Ultra Suede lip sculpting pencil - 26$
Very creamy and malleable - Which gives time to blend and fade harsh lines.
Last relatively long - Standard lasting power, nothing that blows my mind.
Dual ended + sharpener - now, this really is amazing. when I purchased these I expected them to have the small lip brush on the end, for blending lines and/or applying lipstick on top, but to my surprise, it also came with its very own sharpener. every lip liner from Mario gets its individual sharpener, which is great. considering the price, you don’t only get a good quality lip pencil, you also get a lip brush and a sharpener included.
Wooden pencil
Super cheap - Now these are absolutely amazing considering the price.
Good payoff - very pigmented and very creamy, so the colour is easily applied.
Twisty thing - as I’ve already established, I am a wooden pencil fan, so I don’t love packaging like this at all. I mean it works, but the pencil is always the same skinny or thick, no matter what. one of the reasons I love wooden pencils that you sharpen is that I have control over how sharp, thin or thick I want it which allows me to create different looks on the lips. this does not allow me to do that.
Not very long lasting - I find myself reapplying multiple times throughout the day whenever I use these, and therefore that’s not very often. since I dont reach for it I always keep it in my makeup pouch as an emergency lip liner for the rare occasion I forget to bring my desired lip pencil.
These are my general thoughts on the different brands and formulas, without getting into the actual shades and colours. I might write a post where I go through and rank my absolute favourite lip liners that I cannot live without, so look out for that!
thanks for reading:)
Love this!!
